Opensource Softwares and Free softwares
These are the two most confused, and i feel worried to say, the misused words in work locations. I really get irritated when people mix these two words. The concept behind these two is visibly different. The main idea of the -Open Source- is to make the source code available to public, so that its code can be altered to suit the need. The idea behind the -Free Software- is to give out the software without charging money.
When I started using PHP at my work location, my lead thought its a -free software-. When I speak about Linux issues in conversation with other people, they think that I am speaking about -open source-. Actually the terminology should be interchanged. Without the source code, PHP code will not run. And Linux can run even without source code, i.e. from the output of the compiled code. So, PHP should certainly be called Open Source and Linux, Free software.
One thing has to be remembered. All free softwares are not always open source softwares. It depends on whether the source file is provided or not. If I build an application using proprietary softwares and distribute it freely, it can be treated as -Free Software- but not -Open Source-. When I give out the source of the application and make it available for any one to get it, it can then be called -Open Source-. It is not that applications or products from proprietary softwares can never be considered as Open source, unless they are done completely on Linux.
